Requirement Traceability Matrix - Solid Design Solutions Australia

Requirement Traceability Matrix

The Requirement Traceability Matrix (RTM) is a primary tool used by Solid Design Project Managers to verify that your new or updated product meets its product requirements.

The RTM allows us to track requirements from the Product Requirements Document (PRD) stage through to conceptualisation, including proof of concept testing, detailed engineering design, verification, validation and product acceptance testing. Solid Design uses this tool to meet the performance requirements, set up the correct testing procedures and manage the scope of all our projects.

Product Requirements Document

The major input to the RTM and one of the first steps of a successful product design and development program is the creation of the Product Requirements Document (PRD).  A PRD describes the application, primary function, secondary functions, communication, safety and end of life requirements for a product.

Requirement Matrix

Building the RTM starts with the creation of the Requirement Matrix portion of the RTM. Each requirement is categorised, logged and assigned a designation code. The source of the requirement is recorded as well as performance measurement and testing methods required to demonstrate that the product meets the requirement(s).

Traceability Matrix

Within the RTM, the Traceability Matrix portion identifies and tracks which subsystem feature, or group of features, described within the Functional Specification Document is designed within the product to meet specific requirement(s). The Traceability Matrix also identifies which test protocols will be verifying/validating that the performance of the product meets particular requirements.
